Her debut feature film, Jani Be Good, explores the intricate, often turbulent dynamics of an all-female, Chinese-Catholic household across three generations. The film has earned international recognition, selected to screen in the prestigious Asian Future competition at the Tokyo International Film Festival.

For Darmawan, the transition back to filmmaking was both a personal catharsis and a creative necessity. Stepping away from the industry in her late twenties and thirties to navigate the realities of motherhood provided her with an entirely new perspective on her own upbringing, the invisible labor of care work, and the emotional architecture of family life.

Table of Contents

Toggle

A Portrait of Motherhood, Duty, and Generational Silence

From Script to Screen: Production and Collaboration

Navigating the Indonesian Film Value Chain

A Legacy of Arthouse Formative Years

A Portrait of Motherhood, Duty, and Generational Silence

Set over four chilly December days leading up to Christmas, Jani Be Good captures a pressure-cooker environment. The narrative sets off when 13-year-old Jani overhears a heated argument between her 18-year-old sister, Julia, and their mother, Winnie. Following the confrontation, Julia abruptly leaves home, leaving a vacuum in the household.

Winnie, a single mother balancing a demanding job as an accountant with side orders of fruit hampers to make ends meet, channels her stress into strict rules and short-tempered interactions with the daughter who stayed. Meanwhile, young Jani secretly communicates with her runaway sister while finding solace in her grandmother, Oma—a resilient matriarch who sells homemade spring rolls to quietly set aside funds for her own cremation.

Darmawan co-wrote the screenplay with Cyntha Hariadi, channeling personal introspection into a narrative that intentionally avoids painting any character as a villain. Winnie’s overbearing nature is contextualized not as malice, but as the defensive mechanism of an exhausted breadwinner.

"As a kid, I watched her keep the family running, rummaging through things at her desk, making phone calls, cooking dinner, but I never wondered how she felt," Darmawan reflects. "It took having my own family, in my late thirties, to understand how exhausting and all-consuming it is."

The director notes that while households composed entirely of women are often romanticized as harmonious spaces, power dynamics and unspoken resentments remain universal. In many Asian families, conflicts are routinely suppressed under the guise of sparing relatives’ feelings. According to Darmawan, this self-censorship breeds festering emotional wounds that are silently handed down from mothers to daughters.

From Script to Screen: Production and Collaboration

The development and production of Jani Be Good unfolded through a tight-knit, highly deliberate collaborative process. Produced by Taurisia for Palari Films—a Jakarta-based production company co-run by Taurisia and Muhammad Zaidy—the project moved swiftly from conception to principal photography.

Taurisia initially reached out to Darmawan in 2022, offering her the opportunity to direct a family drama. Recognizing Darmawan’s long-dormant potential—having followed her early short films since the early 2000s—Palari Films backed the project based on the thematic maturity of Darmawan’s script.

The production marked a milestone for Palari Films, shooting entirely within a single house in Bandung over a remarkably compact 13-day schedule. Two months prior to filming, Darmawan, Hariadi, and the four principal cast members—Chempa Puteri (playing Jani), Sigi Wimala (playing Winnie), Tutie Kirana (playing Oma), and Hyori Mika (playing Julia)—convened at the location for script readings. Subsequent rehearsals took place in Jakarta before the crew returned to Bandung for two weeks of intensive pre-production alongside veteran cinematographer Teoh Gay Hian and production designer Suherina.

Because the four lead actresses were meeting for the first time, casting relied heavily on chemistry workshops centered around young lead Chempa Puteri. Darmawan was granted absolute creative autonomy by production leadership, a dynamic Taurisia describes as trusting the "chef" with the kitchen.

Navigating the Indonesian Film Value Chain

While Jani Be Good celebrates a major milestone with its Tokyo International Film Festival premiere, its journey highlights systemic challenges within the Indonesian film industry. Palari Films, renowned for critically acclaimed and commercially successful titles such as the Locarno Golden Leopard winner Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash, Posesif, Aruna and Her Palate, and Netflix originals like Borderless Fog and Dear David, continues to face hurdles regarding international and domestic financing.

For Jani Be Good, applications for international development funding were unsuccessful. Domestically, while festival selections elevate studio prestige and portfolio diversity, they frequently saddle independent or arthouse-leaning projects with the perilous label of being "too artistic" or "not accessible enough" for local commercial investors.

Distribution remains a structural bottleneck in the archipelago. Indonesia lacks a unified distribution network that spans across its thousands of islands. Consequently, films face immense commercial pressure during a narrow Thursday-to-Sunday opening weekend, after which exhibitors frequently pull underperforming titles from screens.

In response to these distribution vulnerabilities, Palari Films has launched the Kelas Komunitas Palari (Palari Community Class) initiative. This workshop series trains regional film communities across Indonesia to independently organize local screenings and paid watch parties. Jani Be Good has been selected as the inaugural test case for this grassroots distribution model, offering an innovative blueprint to bypass traditional theatrical choke points.

A Legacy of Arthouse Formative Years

Darmawan’s transition to feature filmmaking is built upon a foundation of critically praised short films and documentaries. Her previous short project, Sugiharti Halim, competed at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival and screened at prominent events in Rotterdam and Busan. Another notable short, Silenced, also secured a screening slot in Rotterdam.

Darmawan describes her early creative output as small-scale, homebound, and DIY—a formative training ground that taught her the power of quiet observation and allowing physical spaces to speak volumes. Alongside her filmmaking career, Darmawan co-founded Kineruku, an independent library and bookstore in Bandung that serves as a cultural hub.

With Jani Be Good slated for a commercial release in Indonesian cinemas on December 10, Darmawan is already looking toward the future. Although she intends to continue directing, she prefers an organic approach to project selection, allowing future films to emerge naturally from her life experiences, family observations, and interactions at her bookstore.

"As for themes, I’m open to anything, as long as it has sad and sweet relationships between people," Darmawan concludes. "That’s where things get complicated and interesting."

Meanwhile, Palari Films maintains a bustling production slate bridging veteran auteurs and emerging voices. Upcoming projects include Edwin’s coming-of-age feature Menari dengan Bayangan (Dancing With My Shadows) in collaboration with singer-songwriter Baskara Putra (Hindia); Aditya Ahmad’s debut feature Goldfish, which triumphed at the Busan Asian Project Market; and Khozy Rizal’s debut feature, I Wanna Dance With Myself.

As Jani Be Good prepares for its domestic rollout and international festival run, it stands as a testament to the resilience of Indonesian independent cinema, proving that deeply personal stories of domestic quietude can resonate on a global stage.

After more than a decade away from the director’s chair to focus on raising a family, acclaimed Indonesian filmmaker Ariani Darmawan has made a triumphant return to narrative cinema.
